3,100 fps, and it still drives through the off shoulder.

At 3,100 fps from a 24-inch barrel, this is the fastest load we offer, delivering 2,561 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. A well-made copper bullet pushed at high speed outperforms a heavier bullet moving slowly—especially since most deer are shot at ranges where velocity matters more than weight. This bullet’s weight is concentrated in the shank, which does the work of driving through. After extensive testing in the 7mm-08 case at these speeds, we consistently landed on 120 grains as the ideal choice.

The precision-machined aluminum tip delivers match-grade accuracy and helps the bullet expand rapidly on impact. Once expanded, it drives deep for reliable penetration. Thanks to the AL-HV tip, the bullet expands even at 1,525 fps, well below the threshold where typical copper bullets stop working. And because it's lead-free, hunters in lead-restricted areas can use it with total confidence.

We turn every AL-HV bullet from solid copper on our own lathes and tip it by hand. Nothing reaches a case without getting looked at first. Every round in the box shoots like the last one, and we hunt with what we sell.

Calculated at a 225-yard zero and 1.5" sight height in standard conditions. The 24" barrel uses our measured 3,100 fps; 16, 18, 20, 22, and 26" velocities are calculated at 25 fps per inch of barrel. Every barrel length here is well above the 1,525 fps expansion threshold at 500 yards, so the bullet is opening reliably at every range on this chart.

Why Hunters Choose the 120 Grain AL-HV

✓ ON-IMPACT EXPANSION
This is one of the fastest-opening monolithic bullets on the market. Unlike most, which need to penetrate a few inches before expanding and often waste energy, this bullet begins to open on contact. That means more energy reaches the vitals. This leads to great blood trails. Plus, it keeps driving through, so you still get reliable exits.
✓ FLAT SHOOTING
Zeroed at 225 yards and traveling at 3,100 fps, you're just an inch high at 200 yards and five inches low at 300. That puts you right in a deer’s vitals from 0 to 300 yards, all without adjusting a turret or worrying about holdover. This isn’t just for close shots though; there’s still 1,256 ft-lbs of energy at 400 yards!
✓ reliable
Many hunters invest heavily in their rifle and optics, but then use whatever ammunition happens to be on the shelf. Yet ammo is the only part of the setup that actually contacts the animal, and it's one of the least expensive factors that can make or break a hunt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 120 grains heavy enough for deer?

Yes. If you're choosing a 7mm-08 for deer, construction matters more than weight. This one leaves the muzzle with 2,561 ft-lbs and still carries 1,518 at 300 yards, which covers whitetails, mule deer, antelope, and hogs.

What is 7mm-08 recoil like with this load?

Less than almost anything else in a deer rifle. You stay in the glass through the shot and see where it hit, so a follow-up is easy if needed. You'll also actually practice with it, which does more for your shooting than any load will.

What is the effective range of this 7mm-08 load?

Past anywhere you should be shooting at game. 7mm-08 effective range usually gets argued in energy, but with copper the real limit is expansion velocity, and this one opens down to 1,525 fps. A 24-inch barrel is still turning 1,966 fps at 500 with 1,030 ft-lbs behind it. Even a 16-inch clears the threshold out there.

What does the aluminum tip actually do?

On impact, the tip drives back into the nose to initiate expansion, allowing the bullet to expand even at 1,525 fps, long after standard copper bullets quit. Expansion is controlled: the petals peel back and wrap around the shank, creating a larger frontal area while the shank continues to drive forward. If the bullet hits heavy bone at close range, a petal may shear off, but with most of the weight in the shank, deep penetration is still ensured.

Can I hunt with this where non-lead ammunition is required?

Yes. This bullet clears non-lead rules on federal land and in restricted zones.

Why copper instead of a lead-core bullet?

A jacketed lead bullet can separate from its core, so it either fragments early or slips through without opening. Ours is one piece of copper with an aluminum tip. It expands rapidly on contact and the shank keeps tracking straight behind it. The wound channel at 300 yards looks like the one at 50.
